Interferential therapy

Interferential therapy is a method of physiotherapy treatment that uses medium-frequency electric currents to affect body tissues. This approach is actively used in medical practice to eliminate pain syndromes, restore tissue function and improve the general condition of the patient.

This technique is based on the use of two or more medium-frequency electric currents (typically 4,000–5,000 Hz) that intersect in tissues, creating low-frequency interference currents (0–100 Hz). This process allows currents to penetrate deeply into tissues, minimizing discomfort on the skin surface. The method was developed by Austrian scientist Hans German in the 1950s and has since become an important part of physical therapy.

Interference therapy

When the procedure is required

Interferent therapy is prescribed for a wide range of diseases and conditions associated with pain, inflammatory processes or impaired tissue function. The method is used both independently and as part of complex therapy. Indications for use include the following conditions:

  • Chronic and acute pain in the back, joints, muscles, including neuralgia and myalgia.
  • Arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis in remission, other chronic inflammatory processes.
  • Recovery after fractures, dislocations, sprains of ligaments.
  • Radiculitis, plexitis, recovery from strokes, other neuralgia.
  • Spasms, muscle atrophy, decreased tone.
  • Osteochondrosis, arthrosis, spondylosis, other diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

For this procedure, there are certain contraindications, including acute infectious diseases, oncology, thrombophlebitis, the presence of a pacemaker, pregnancy, epilepsy. Before prescribing the procedure, the doctor conducts a diagnosis to exclude risks and draw up an individual plan.

How interferential therapy works

The treatment procedure is carried out in the conditions of a physiotherapy room with the help of special devices that generate currents. The patient is located on the couch, and the specialist prepares the equipment and adjusts the current parameters depending on the diagnosis and treatment goals. After that, the staff acts according to a predetermined plan:

  • A doctor or nurse cleanses the skin in the area of exposure and applies a contact gel to improve current conduction.
  • Electrodes (usually four) are applied to the patient's body so that currents cross in the affected area.
  • The specialist chooses the frequency, intensity and duration of exposure. The parameters depend on the nature of the pathology and the sensitivity of the patient.
  • The patient feels a slight tingling or heat in the area of exposure. The session lasts 10.–30 minutes.
  • Electrodes are removed, the skin is cleaned, the doctor assesses the patient's condition.

The course of treatment usually includes 10-15 sessions, conducted daily or every other day. This physiotherapy technique is comfortable for the patient, does not require special training and does not cause pronounced side effects. Only specialists with appropriate certification are allowed to carry out procedures, which guarantees the safety and effectiveness of treatment.

Results of treatment

Interferential therapy demonstrates high efficiency, minimizing drug therapy and speeding up the recovery and rehabilitation time. The main advantage of the procedure–the possibility of a point effect on the affected tissue without irritation of the skin and surface layers. The results depend on many factors, with these positive changes:

  • Reducing the intensity of pain after the first sessions.
  • Increased blood flow in the affected tissues, which contributes to their recovery.
  • Reducing edema and inflammatory processes in joints and muscles.
  • Elimination of spasms, increase in tone and muscle strength.
  • Stimulation of tissue healing after injuries or operations.
  • Increased mobility, reduced discomfort, improved quality of life.

The effectiveness of the method is confirmed by clinical studies and patient reviews. To achieve a sustainable result, it is important to follow the doctor's recommendations, including completing a full course and combining with other types of therapy, such as exercise therapy or massage. This procedure remains a safe and affordable method of recovery, widely used in modern medicine.
