Sinusoidal modulated currents

Sinusoidal modulated currents (SMTs) are alternating electrical pulses of medium frequency (typically 2 to 10 kHz) modulated in amplitude by low frequency oscillations (10 to 150 Hz). This combination allows you to penetrate deeply into the tissues, minimizing skin irritation, which makes SMT one of the most popular methods of physical therapy.

SMT is used to relieve pain, stimulate muscles, improve blood circulation, accelerate tissue regeneration. Procedures are performed in medical institutions equipped with electrotherapy devices. Before appointment, the doctor conducts diagnosis, determines indications and contraindications to ensure the safety and effectiveness of treatment.

When the application of the method is required

SMT therapy is prescribed for a wide range of diseases and conditions when therapeutic effects on tissues without the use of medications are required. Indications for use include:

  • Musculoskeletal diseases–osteochondrosis, arthritis, arthrosis, myositis.
  • Neurological disorders, including neuralgia, radiculitis, the consequences of strokes.
  • Injuries and post-traumatic conditions–Contusions, sprains, fractures in the recovery stage.
  • Chronic pain syndromes, such as migraines, phantom pain.
  • Impaired circulation–varicose veins, lymphostasis.
  • Gastrointestinal pathologies–dyskinesia of the bile tract, chronic gastritis.

SMT is not prescribed in the presence of contraindications, such as cancer, acute infections, thrombophlebitis, pregnancy, the presence of a pacemaker or metal implants in the area of exposure. The decision on appointment is made by the doctor on the basis of anamnesis and examination of the patient. Procedures are carried out by qualified specialists–Physiotherapists, rehabilitation doctors or other employees who have undergone special training.

How the procedures go

SMT procedures are carried out in a specially equipped physiotherapy room under the supervision of medical personnel. The patient is placed on the couch and the exposure areas are treated to ensure good contact of the electrodes with the skin. The procedures include several stages:

  • The skin is cleaned, a gel is applied to it, or electrode pads are wetted to improve conductivity.
  • Electrodes are placed in the affected area or along nerve pathways, depending on the purpose of the procedure.
  • The physiotherapist selects current parameters (frequency, intensity, modulation mode) in accordance with the doctor's prescription.
  • The patient feels a slight tingling or heat. The duration of the session is 10–20 minutes.
  • Electrodes are removed, the skin is cleaned, the patient is given recommendations for further behavior.

The standard course of treatment is usually 8–15 sessions, held on an individually developed schedule. During the procedure, the patient is monitored by a specialist to avoid discomfort or side effects.

Results of the TMS

The use of sinusoidally modulated currents gives pronounced therapeutic effects, which depend on the diagnosis and individual characteristics of the patient. Key results include:

  • Analgesia by blocking pain impulses, which is especially effective for chronic pain.
  • Improving blood circulation by stimulating microcirculation, contributing to the saturation of tissues with oxygen.
  • Relieving muscle spasms through exposure to tissues, which helps relax them and restore mobility.
  • Tissue regeneration, acceleration of healing after injuries and operations.
  • Anti-inflammatory effect, reduced swelling and inflammation in the affected areas.

The effectiveness of sinusoidal modulated currents is confirmed by clinical studies and many years of practice. However, to achieve a lasting result, it is important to follow the doctor’s recommendations, including the number of sessions and combination with other treatments, such as massage or physical therapy. When applied correctly, this technique becomes an important tool for restoring health and improving the quality of life of patients.

By contacting Neuro-clinic, you will receive professional assistance from qualified specialists. The use of the most modern techniques and innovative equipment can significantly improve the condition of patients. Another advantage of our clinic is the affordable prices for all procedures.
