When the application of the method is required
SMT therapy is prescribed for a wide range of diseases and conditions when therapeutic effects on tissues without the use of medications are required. Indications for use include:
- Musculoskeletal diseases–osteochondrosis, arthritis, arthrosis, myositis.
- Neurological disorders, including neuralgia, radiculitis, the consequences of strokes.

SMT is not prescribed in the presence of contraindications, such as cancer, acute infections, thrombophlebitis, pregnancy, the presence of a pacemaker or metal implants in the area of exposure. The decision on appointment is made by the doctor on the basis of anamnesis and examination of the patient. Procedures are carried out by qualified specialists–Physiotherapists, rehabilitation doctors or other employees who have undergone special training.
How the procedures go
SMT procedures are carried out in a specially equipped physiotherapy room under the supervision of medical personnel. The patient is placed on the couch and the exposure areas are treated to ensure good contact of the electrodes with the skin. The procedures include several stages:
- The skin is cleaned, a gel is applied to it, or electrode pads are wetted to improve conductivity.
- Electrodes are placed in the affected area or along nerve pathways, depending on the purpose of the procedure.
- The physiotherapist selects current parameters (frequency, intensity, modulation mode) in accordance with the doctor's prescription.
- The patient feels a slight tingling or heat. The duration of the session is 10–20 minutes.
- Electrodes are removed, the skin is cleaned, the patient is given recommendations for further behavior.
The standard course of treatment is usually 8–15 sessions, held on an individually developed schedule. During the procedure, the patient is monitored by a specialist to avoid discomfort or side effects.
