School readiness checklist

The more "yes" answers, the higher the probability that the child's brain structures have matured and they are ready for school without stress.

What can a future first-grader do?

  • Persistence. Calmly works at a desk for 15–20 minutes.
  • Understands instructions. Follows 2–3 step commands ("pick up, bring, put down").
  • Fine motor skills. Buttons up buttons, laces shoes.
  • Memory. Remembers short instructions without repetition.
  • Attention. Concentrates on one task for 7–10 minutes.
  • Emotional stability. Calmly handles losing or being refused.
  • Social skills. Knows how to share, wait their turn, and negotiate.
  • Self-care. Dresses, eats, uses the toilet without adult help.
  • Adaptability. Is not afraid of noise, new places, or sudden changes.
  • Interest in knowledge. The child asks questions themselves and wants to learn new things.

What to do if there are fewer than half "yes" answers?

First of all - don't panic, but gently work on building the skills by September. Or show the child to a neuropsychologist. Sometimes difficulties with persistence or memory are not laziness, but features of brain functioning that can be corrected.
