Many parents think: "So what if they don't pronounce a couple of sounds correctly, school will fix it." In reality, a speech sound disorder that is not corrected before school directly impacts writing and reading.
Underdeveloped pronunciation often leads to persistent writing errors:
The brain cannot match sounds to letters because the child does not distinguish sounds by ear. They hear "rabbit" as "wabbit" - and write it the same way. Sound-letter analysis and synthesis are disrupted, and this is the foundation of reading.
Incorrect pronunciation interferes with learning endings, cases, and agreements. The child writes not only with letter errors but also with gross grammatical violations ("I no have book", "he go park").
As a result, the child is smart and diligent but gets C's and D's. They develop anxiety and reluctance to learn, while parents do not understand - "they seem to read well, but their writing is terrible."
At Neuro-Clinic, we help preschoolers - timely consultation with a speech therapist helps to correct sounds and develop phonemic awareness. Then writing and reading will come easily, without tears.
