Back in 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a policy statement: parents should start introducing their children to books from infancy. Not wait until the child learns to read, but read aloud to them from the first months of life.
Reading aloud to children aged 1-3 has an amazing effect not only on the little ones, but also on the parents themselves. Those who regularly read to their children become less irritable and aggressive toward them. And children, in turn, grow up calmer.
If you read to your child 1-2 times a week with a short story, by age five they will have heard 63 thousand more words than their peers. And if you read 3-5 times a week, that number grows to 170 thousand words. Vocabulary, speech, thinking — all of this directly depends on how many words a child hears at an early age.
The most important thing is not the amount read, but interest. Do not force — engage instead:
let the child choose a book from those offered;
captivate them with the plot, discuss the characters;
draw attention to the pictures, look at them together.
A child should see parents with a book, not only with a phone or tablet. If books are part of adult life, they will naturally become part of the child's life. And when the child grows up, you can switch roles: let them read aloud to you. This is not only beneficial for speech but also creates that very bond that will last a lifetime.
