Psychological trauma in a child is not always some single terrible incident. Often it accumulates over the years and is not visible from the outside. Here are five main causes that really hurt children.
- Violence and abuse. Physical, emotional or sexual abuse by adults is the most obvious, but not the only cause.
- Emotional rejection and lack of attention. When a child is ignored, treated coldly, not noticed, it hits no less than screaming. They stop feeling needed.
- Serious chronic illnesses. Asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, inflammatory bowel diseases - they in themselves worsen life. And they also form a feeling of "I am not like everyone else," fear, and isolation.
- Attachment trauma. Phrases that adults throw out in anger: "I can't stand seeing you anymore," "You are not my son/daughter," "As far as I'm concerned, I don't exist for you" - these are not just words. They destroy the very foundation of a child's security - attachment to a loved one.
- Emotional instability in the family. Father or mother abuses alcohol, constant scandals, unpredictable reactions from adults. The child lives in a "waiting for the blow" mode, their nervous system is constantly on edge.
