When we talk about school readiness, we usually remember: can the child read, count, tie shoelaces, sit still. All of this is important. But the most important indicator is the intelligence quotient (IQ).
It is IQ that determines whether a child can study in a regular general education program or needs a special education program.
In Russia, psychiatrists and medical psychologists use the classification of Emil Kraepelin:
- Mild intellectual disability: IQ 50–69 points;
- Moderate intellectual disability: IQ 35–49 points;
- Severe intellectual disability: IQ 20–34 points;
- Profound: IQ below 20 points
It is important to understand. Low IQ is not a sentence and not laziness. It is an objective characteristic that helps to choose the right learning environment. If a child with mild intellectual disability is placed in a regular class without support, they will face bullying, chronic academic failure, and neurosis. But in a special education program, they can feel successful and master the skills needed for life.
