If you have decided to correct burring, the speech therapist will draw up an individual plan. Here is what it usually consists of.
Stages of correction
- Articulatory gymnastics. Special exercises ("Painter," "Mushroom," "Horse," "Woodpecker") strengthen the tongue muscles, stretch the hyoid ligament, and develop the mobility of the articulatory apparatus.
- Breathing exercises. Train the strength of the air stream, without which vibration of the tip of the tongue is impossible.
- Sound production. The speech therapist explains and shows the correct position of the tongue and lips for the sound [r]. Sometimes special probes are used to induce vibration.
- Automation. The most important and longest stage: reinforcing the sound in syllables, words, phrases, sentences, and spontaneous speech.
If the cause is anatomical, additional intervention is required: orthodontic treatment (braces, aligners) or frenuloplasty (tongue-tie surgery).
How long will it take?
The timeline is individual and depends on:
- the initial state of pronunciation;
- regularity of sessions;
- involvement in the process.
On average, producing an isolated sound takes 2–4 weeks, and complete automation in free speech takes 3 to 6 months.
Important nuances
- Motivation — without desire and discipline, progress will be slow.
- Psychological aspect — sometimes the fear of making mistakes or lack of confidence gets in the way. In such cases, working with a psychologist may be helpful.
- Self-control — adults often find it harder to hear themselves from the outside, so the speech therapist's supervision at the initial stages is very important.
Correction is possible at any age — the main thing is to start!
